Week 13 - Building the House of the Lord

In chapter 7, David and the nation have entered into a season of peace and David decides that it is time to direct his attention toward building a house for the Lord. Nathan, the prophet at the time, thinks this is a great idea but is later shown a different path by God. The Lord explains to Nathan that David will not be the one to build the house of the Lord. Rather, it will be his ancestor, his offspring, that will do this.

This prophecy given about the builder of God's house is one that stands out to me as one that points so clearly to Jesus. While David understood this prophecy as referring to what would happen in the life of his son, who would be the next king, I think God had more in mind. It is true, historically speaking, that David's offspring would build the temple of God. His name is Solomon and we will read about him soon. We cannot help but notice how God's word to Nathan finds its greater fulfillment in Jesus.

First, The book of Matthew makes clear that Jesus is an actual descendent of David. Furthermore, when God talks about David's offspring in 7:14, he declares that he will be his father and he will be his son. Who would have thought that Jesus would be both of these things! And finally, Jesus himself even looked at the temple, which was in it's second version BTW, and said that if this temple is torn down he will raise it up in 3 days. Jesus was both son of David and son of God, and he has build an everlasting temple that will never be destroyed. Jesus' temple is called the Church!
